Entry 2 16-18 Independent Study

May 8, 2014

Hello Entry 2 students,

Chikako is not here today. So you have your session this morning with me, Mike.

Some of you know me, but maybe some of you do not. Here are some sentences about me. Can you guess which ones are true and which are false?

  • I was born in Lewisham.
  • I have one older brother.
  • My favourite sport is hockey.
  • At one time, I had 9 cats as pets.
  • I have lived in Spain.

Make your guess, then I will read out the correct versions and I would like you to write them down.

Listen to my instructions.

What is happening in each of these pictures?

Can you tell the story of one of the pictures?

There is a boy and he is sitting on a donkey. I think he has been travelling for many hours, because he looks tired…

Two men are talking in the street. I think one of them is asking the other one for some money. He doesn’t look happy…

One day a cat and a dog…

What do you like doing when you go on holiday?

Where is your favourite place to go on holiday?

Where did you go on your last holiday?

I just like relaxing on holiday. I like sitting down with a book and doing nothing. I like relaxing because my job is quite stressful. It is really nice to get away…

My favourite place for a holiday is Malta. I love the architecture and the scenery. The best thing is that the people are so friendly. You really feel at home…

For my last holiday I went to Santander in Spain. I stayed there for a week and climbed up a mountain and explored some of the caves. It was scary!!! …

Would you like to go to one of these places on holiday? Why?

What do you like doing in your free time?

A lot of people like doing interesting things in their free time. Reading, watching TV, fishing and doing exercise are some of the most popular pasttimes for people in the UK. What do you like doing in your free time? Write down 3 to 5 sentences talking about your hobbies? Look at this example:

One of my hobbies is running. I try to go running three times a week and I normally run between 3 and 4 miles. I also like reading books and magazines. Sometimes I write reviews of things I read for websites.

You can use the phrases in bold in your own writing.

Practise your writing on paper and then type it up in this box:

Have a look at this set of pictures. Can you name all the hobbies?

Recording animal’s thoughts

April 23, 2013

Hello Entry 1!

Yesterday and last week we worked on a video of two talking cats. If you want to see the video again, here it is:

What other animals’ names do you know in English? Write down as many as you can in 2 minutes.

Then look at this slideshow and see if you can think of any more: some animals

Do you know the names of all these animals? Have a look at this word cloud to check:
Wordle: some animals You can click on it to make it bigger.

Do you know how to make the plurals of all these words?

1 dog > 2 dogs

1 cat > 2 …?

Write down the plurals and then check with another person.

Look again at the animals in the pictures below:

What do you think they are saying?

You are going to use a website called http://screencast-o-matic.com/ to record what you think they are saying and save it as a video file. Then we will watch the videos.

Here is a guide how to set up the recording: recording a screencast

Good luck!

Searching for pictures to use

March 5, 2013

Hello Entry 1!

I have made a document showing you how you can find pictures to use in your work. It is very important to be careful if we use pictures on the Internet, and to make sure that we can use them safely. If we don’t, we might be breaking copyright, which is against the law. We must say who took the picture and copy the web link if we use photos on the Internet, and we must only use photos that we are allowed to use.

Copyright license choice by opensourceway on Flickr

Read this document (I have also given it to you on paper) and find out about searching for pictures:

How to search for pictures to use in your work

Find a picture from the country that you went on holiday to yesterday and make a postcard

Another resource that is useful for pictures is ELTpics <- click on this link to look at some interesting pictures. You can do some of the following things:

  • Find a picture you like and say why you like it
  • Find a picture you don’t like and say why you don’t like it
  • Find any picture and see how many words in English you can say that are things in the photo
  • Find a picture of a person and write their story (say who they are, what they are doing, what they look like,…)

Hungry Planet – recording yourself

Good afternoon ESOL Entry 1 students!

This afternoon’s lesson is going to be about food you eat and what other people eat all around the world.

Click here to read a document:

What the world eats part 1 Time

Look at the images, say what you can see, and try to guess how much it costs for each family’s weekly food shopping. You might be surprised!

Talking about pictures

June 21, 2012

Hi students,

This afternoon, I’d like you to find an interesting picture and write about

  • what you can see
  • how it makes you feel
  • what the people in the picture are doing

Look down to the right and find the tab called ELTPICS ON FLICKR.

Click on a picture that you find interesting and write about it.

Here is an example:

This is a picture of a carpark. I think it is the largest carpark in the world. I have never seen a bigger carpark in my life. I guess there are about one thousand to two thousand cars in the carpark. I can see red, blue, green, yellow, white and black cars. There are so many different colours. This photo was taken from an aeroplane, so I think that the person was going on holiday. This photo makes me feel happy, like I am on holiday.

Here is a quick test:

  • What is the picture?
  • How many cars do I think there are?
  • What colours of car can you see?
